Socks are an important part of every wardrobe. Along with their functional uses, socks can really bring an outfit to the next level. I myself have amassed a large collection of all different types of funky socks. However, the materials, dyes, and production methods used to make socks can be very bad for the environment. As an environmentally conscious sock connoisseur, I have put together a list of brands that make and sell socks in an environmentally friendly manner.
zkano- Based out of Fort Payne, Alabama, zkano is a family buisness that was founded in 1991. All their cotton is organic and locally sourced. They also use dyes that have very low impacts on the environment. This company has a wide range of styles and designs, meaning you’re bound to find a pair to suit you!

PACT apparel- Based out of Boulder, Colorado, PACT apparel believes in using sustainable materials for all their clothing. Their socks are made of 100% organic cotton that is “so soft you'll (almost) cry”. This brand also uses fair trade practices, so you know your purchase is going to help support organic cotton farmers and allow them to continue their work. PACT apparel also sells all their socks in packs, meaning you will get 5-6 unique pairs of socks per order rather than just one.

Thought Clothing- Thought Clothing is a company dedicated to using sustainable materials when creating all their clothing items. Their socks are made from a range of materials, such as bamboo and hemp, that have a lower impact on the environment than generic cotton. The designs featured on these socks are almost as cool as the materials they’re made of. From spaceships to mustaches, anyone will find a design they like from this sustainable clothing store.

Conscious Step- Using only organic materials, Conscious Step strives to reduce their impact on the environment. Most of their products are farmed and produced in India to help bring the country out of poverty in an environmentally friendly way. Along with this, Conscious Step donates a large portion of their proceeds to a range of charities that are all dedicated to solving environmental issues! With each style of socks supporting a different charity, you even get to choose what cause your purchase supports! With cool designs and even better causes to choose from, it seems like a no brainer to buy socks from this company.

Osom Brand- Using only upcycled textiles, Osom Brand is a leader in sustainable sock production. Used and destroyed clothing are sourced by Osom and given a new life as super cool socks! Along with this, no water is used in the production of these socks and there is no toxic waste created in the production process. Along with all these benefits, Osom Brands also offers a wide variety of cool sock designs to choose from.

Maggie’s Organics- Like many other companies on this list, Maggie's only uses organic materials in their products. However, Maggie’s goes the extra mile and only buys raw materials from U.S. based organic farmers and farmers in areas of Peru. This practice has allowed them to have a super low carbon footprint for an internationally-shipping organization. Maggie's also produces socks that are hypo-allergenic so any one can rock a pair of sustainable socks!

As we put more and more pressure on our planet, it will become more important to think of new ways to conserve resources and become more sustainable. I think buying eco-friendly clothes, and socks in particular, is something that a lot of people can do to help reduce our impact on our planet.
Any and all brands and specific products named in the above article are discussed purely for environmentally friendly sock ideas. They do not reflect opinions, preferences, or endorsements of WSU’s Environmental Science Club and do not have any affiliation with WSU’s Environmental Science Club, or any entity related to Washington State University.
