Whether you’re a personal fan of wearing makeup (or not), most of us can agree that the beauty industry is harmful to the environment in certain ways. We can harm ecosystems through containers ending up in landfills, harsh chemical ingredients, and even animal testing and products. There is usually some aspect we can improve for the planet (and our own health) whenever we make decisions as consumers.
College is a fantastic time to create healthy life-long habits, and one of those can be always making an effort to try and nurture our planet when we have to purchase things. Even if you’re not a college student, simply knowing where to start with items sold locally and affordably can be a huge motivator!
Here’s a handful of products that show a bit of love to mama earth, while still doing their job just the same!
1. LUSH “Feeling Younger” Skin Tint ($14.95)
This is a cream-based highlighter with many plant-based ingredients, such as oatmeal, cocoa butter, and orange water. It comes in a glass container that can be reused and the product is cruelty free and vegan. Fun fact: Many of the LUSH founders were pioneers in the animal rights movement!
2. PACIFICA Alight Multi-Mineral BB Cream ($16)
Pacifica is a brand known for being cruelty free and vegan, and the majority of their products are sold in eco-friendly packaging as well. This BB cream is a 100% natural way to illuminate, hydrate, and tint your skin. The packaging is recyclable too!
3. Tarte Aquacealer Concealer ($26)
Despite the higher price tag, a little of this vegan formula goes a long way! Tarte is America’s #1 concealer brand, and also happens to be cruelty free. The lightweight formula has natural extracts and is packaged in a glass bottle.
4. Zao Organic Aloe Vera Volumizing Mascara ($21.64)

This eye color comes in a container that can be used on its own, in a magnetic compact, or in the brand’s own bamboo compact. The company is vegan, sustainable, and cruelty free, and uses only natural ingredients and pigments in their makeup!

Fruit pigmented, natural, vegan, cruelty free, and in a wooden pencil! This eyeliner has stellar reviews and eyeball-friendly ingredients, such as jojoba and shea butter.
7. Pacifica Color Quench Lip Tint ($5)
This creamy lip color is made without carmine, phthalates, petroleum, silicone, or animal products! The combination of recyclable packaging and cute natural shades makes it hard to beat for the price. Many lipsticks use fish scales in them to create shimmer, but this lip tint uses mica instead.
8. Burt’s Bees All Aglow Bronzer and Highlighter Stick ($13)
