Every time you recycle a water bottle, the recycling fairy exchanges it for 5 cents! Just kidding, we wish though! Happy April Fools!
Switch it up this year, and make your pranks environmentally friendly – Here’s how to do it!
1. Grassy Keyboard
If you’re going for the long term prank, that lasts for days, and may make your pranked friend want to buy a new keyboard, this is the one for you. Remove the keys from the keyboard. Place a wet paper towel with a cress seeds and reattach the keys. Wait a couple days, and your keys will be sprouting with new ideas.
Note to the wise, this prank works best with an old-fashioned keyboard from when they still had removable keys.
What to do after: Laugh!
After having your fun, the keyboard can be used as hipster décor, or you can remove the keys, compost the grass, put the keys back on, and see if the keyboard will still work (if it doesn't, look up where you can dispose of electronics near you).
2. Alternative to the Classic Balloon Prank
Instead of using blow up balloons and filling up a car or a room, invest in some playballs or non-packaged sports balls found at Walmart, Target, or any other store that carries them.
After: Donate the play/sport balls to a local toy drive, Goodwill, or your local elementary school.
3. Composting Your Neighbor’s Yard
Leave the toilet paper and plastic forks in the kitchen and bathroom this year and take it to the next level with compost.
Use your own compost or buy some. Then in the dead of night generously apply the compost on your neighbor’s yard. The next morning, your neighbor will be in for a great surprise if they love to garden.
After: Leave it! Or if you applied too much, move the excess compost to a community garden.
4. A Vegetable Treat!
Make some homemade candies with a twist.
Brussels sprouts make for a great “cake pop”. Using recyclable or compostable sticks, dip the brussels sprouts into a bowl of chocolate and then let it harden.
Craving some candied “apples”? Using recyclable or compostable sticks, dip a peeled onion into a caramel sauce and then let it harden.
These are healthy-ish snacks for anyone interested!
After: Enjoy the surprised and grossed out looks on your friends' faces. Then recycle or compost the sticks used, and compost any leftover food.
5. Social Media or Technology Pranks
Post something on your social media account (HINT HINT: This is completely Zero Waste). Or change the settings on a friend’s phone.
For example: Changing their password to “GO GREEN” or swapping the background with a frozen screenshot.
We also think this link has some good instructions and ideas for digitally pranking your friends:
After: Make sure your friendship is strong enough to last with these pranks!
All these pranks should give you some pretty good laughs, and you won’t have to produce a bunch of waste to do it! Just remember: when you prank people, confuse them, don't abuse them (confuse or mildly freak them out, don't hurt or terrify them).
